{"id":3072,"date":"2013-03-27T12:46:23","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T12:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/?p=3072"},"modified":"2017-06-16T16:09:23","modified_gmt":"2017-06-16T15:09:23","slug":"alchemy-recommends-dracula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/index.php\/2013\/03\/alchemy-recommends-dracula\/","title":{"rendered":"Alchemy Recommends: Dracula"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK\u2019s legendary horror studio, Hammer films, has been delighting fans over the past few months with reissues of classic movies from their illustrious back catalogue, carefully restored to allow 21st Century viewers to enjoy them with the blood reds and midnight blacks as vivid as when they were first made decades back. <!--more-->The latest such restored release has provoked particular excitement among vintage horror fiends: For, not only is it Hammer\u2019s most iconic production, Dracula, but they have also discovered and reinstated two previously unseen scenes, cut from the film when first shown in 1958. While the film \u2013 complete with previously deleted scenes restored \u2013 only qualifies for a \u201815\u2019 certificate today, back then, censors didn\u2019t think the British public were ready for Hammer\u2019s rich blend of Gothic eroticism and period horror, and fought the studio every step of the way, resulting in the two cuts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/index.php\/2013\/03\/alchemy-recommends-dracula\/drac\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3078\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3078\" title=\"drac\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-27x36.jpg 27w, https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-69x90.jpg 69w, https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-116x150.jpg 116w, https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac-24x32.jpg 24w, https:\/\/www.alchemyengland.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/drac.jpg 348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a>Happily, Hammer persevered, and the outcome is a taut, lean production \u2013 particularly in comparison to lavish adaptations like Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1992 version \u2013 which renders the story down to a contest of wills between Sir Christopher Lee\u2019s imperiously lupine Count and Peter Cushing\u2019s steely, hawkish Dr Van Helsing. The peerless performances by Lee and Cushing and lush Gothic atmosphere make this not just arguably the best version of Dracula ever filmed, but also a true classic of British filmmaking in any genre. This new DVD\/Blu-ray edition, overflowing with fascinating extras, belongs on the shelf of any serious fan of Gothic horror or vintage Brit cinema.
