The Curse of Monte Cristo

1 I loved her. I loved her so much. I would have done anything for her. I would have given her the clothes I’m wearing and freeze to death, I would have given her my food and starve for her, my heart…I would have died for her.

I was a poor man. I have never had much to begin with. When her father decided to force her into marrying a rich man, I went insane.

My work on the ship was all I had so I started working even harder than before. I wanted to become Captain and earn more money, buy a house and show her father that I was a man who could take care of his daughter.

I started working day and night, sweating, bleeding, hurting but it was all worth it because I was doing it for her.

Then the day came. Coincidentally it was the day before the wedding. I was going to become Captain at last. The Captain invited me in his office. He was going to retire. He told me I was doing a great job, perfect even. I was so happy. He told me I was his best man and that the ship could not survive without me. Never had I been more proud of myself.

His son suddenly came into the office. I wasn’t sure why his son was there. Then the big news came. The Captain told me that his son was taking over. His son was going to be the new Captain and wanted me to be his right hand. I couldn’t believe it. His son? That lazy incompetent fool? His son? That boy had never worked a day in his life and did not know the meaning of hard labour!

My life was over.

That night I thought I was going to lose my mind. My love was going to marry someone else just because he was rich. She loved me! I loved her! How can a pitiful Captain position stand in our way? Our love was eternal. Our love was beyond this world!

2 No, this can’t be happening! The thought of my love giving herself to another man! Another man touching her, kissing her…

I sobbed hard. I screamed. I punched walls.

Around midnight I became calm. I knew exactly what to do.

The wedding day. I wasn’t sad, I wasn’t desperate. I was on my way to my lover’s home. I had money in my pockets and a new wardrobe.

Her father stared at me after he had opened the door.

‘I am Captain now.’ I said, ‘I have money, a house and I can offer your daughter everything she wants and needs.’

‘The scar on your face…’ gasped the man.

‘Just an accident on the ship,’ I replied coldly.

Her father had no more excuses, no more objections especially because now I was even richer than his daughter’s fiancée. What could he do?

I married my love. That night we made sweet loved. The next day I showed her the ship.

She asked me how I got it all.

‘You told me to always be honest with you,’ I started.

‘Yes of course.’

‘Even now?’

3
‘Even now,’ she smiled.

‘I killed the Captain and his son. I took their riches. I did it all for you.’

She stared at me for a moment. Then she started laughing. I looked at her grimly. She continued to laugh but then noticing my face she stopped.

‘It’s a joke,’ she said. ‘It’s a joke is it not?’

I smiled. ‘Of course it is darling.’

‘You never told me about your face. What happened to your face?’ She asked suspiciously.

‘Just an accident love. Just an accident….’

When you love someone you’d do anything for them. I did everything for my love and I am not ashamed. I am not sorry. If I had a choice to turn back time I’d still do the same.

Every night I dream of their screams, every time I look in the mirror I remember. But that is a sacrifice I am willing to make and live with for the rest of my life.

Now, 20 years later, I still have my wife at my side, we have beautiful children and I am happy. Tell me, if had not done it, would my story have turned out so perfect?
