The British Library’s Gothic exhibition

Vampires, ghosts and zombies are all featured in the British Library’s magnificent new exhibition, ‘Terror And Wonder: The Gothic Imagination’, which opened last week. Timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the very first Gothic novel, Horace Walpole’s ‘The Castle Of Otranto’, it’s the UK’s largest exhibition of Gothic and is open to the public until 6 January 2015.

Alchemy were lucky enough to get a preview and adored all the amazing historical pieces in there. The exhibition is divided into six sections beginning with Walpole’s grandiose oeuvre, taking in poetry, classic horror movies, costume and ending with a photographic representation of the modern gothic subculture. Inside, you can see rare manuscripts such as the original draft of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and a first edition of ‘Dracula’, breath-taking artwork and even film clips with spoken word contributions from authors such as Neil Gaiman and Sarah Waters. The library will also be hosting a programme of themed events including the launch of Anne Rice’s new novel ‘Lestat’ and gothic journalist Natasha Scharf’s latest book ‘The Art Of Gothic’.

Display your love of all things Gothic with Alchemy’s latest pieces, which include the elegant Viennese Nights necklace [P701], dripping with Swarovski-accented bats, and Gothic Devotion Cross [P698] – one of the most widely-used amulets in the world. Both are lovingly cast in solid pewter and come with their own chain
